Pastel Painting of the California Coast

"Big Sur" 11x14 inches, soft pastel on board.
Available through Etsy

We took an incredible road trip this summer, and one of the places we went was Pacific Grove, California.  While we were there we did the iconic drive along Big Sur.  This is painted from one of our stops along that drive.

New pastel painting - dark and daring!

Pastel on board, 8x10 inches
Available through Etsy

I am still working on mark making.  I was feeling a bit dramatic while painting on this one and it shows!  I liked how it turned out though.  A nice change from my normal softer colors.

Pastel Painting, "Tempest"

"Tempest" 12x16 inches, pastel on board
Available through Etsy

This is a bit more abstract than usual for me and I really enjoyed it.  I used all of my favorite colors, and tried to capture a feeling instead of a scene.  It was inspired by a piece of music that I heard at the Oregon Symphony with my father, "Become Ocean" by the very talented John Luther Adams.  I felt so lucky to hear it live - the Oregon Symphony always does an amazing job, but this was quite an experience.

Pastel Painting, "Shady Cove"

Shady Cove, 8x10 inches, pastel on board
Available on Etsy

My family and I went on a wonderful camping trip this summer to a campground called Shady Cove, on the Little North Fork river, in Oregon.  We were lucky enough to get our favorite campsite, and also to have absolutely perfect weather!  This campground is part of the Opal Creek Wilderness, which is (in my opinion) one of the most beautiful places on Earth.  I painted this with the board propped on my lap, sitting right in front of the river, and added a few touches back in the studio.

"John Day Reflections" an original pastel painting.

"John Day Reflections", pastel on board, 11x14
Available through Etsy

Like the previous painting, this was done more quickly than usual for me.  I am really enjoying it - it forces me to relax and stop thinking about the details too much.  This painting started with a color study and some reference photos, taken while we were on vacation on the John Day River, near the town of Spray, in Eastern Oregon.  It is such a gorgeous area - we will definitely be back!  Even though I was painting like a whirlwind, I did stop to take a couple of progress photos!  :)

First a quick sketch...

Then a blocking in of the underpainting, which I blended thoroughly with my hands....

And a few details....  not too many!  :)

South Falls at Silver Falls ~ original pastel painting

I have been going to the South Falls at Silver Falls Park my whole life.  It is a beautiful place, and I was a bit intimidated to try to paint something that I was so fond of.  I hope a little of the peaceful feeling that it gives me comes through in the painting.

Silver Falls : South Falls, 12x16, pastel on board
Available through Etsy

A quick sketch...

The watercolor underpainting...

Getting in some of the darks...

At this point, I got caught up in the painting and forgot to take any more progress photos!  But I think the watercolor underpainting is the part that is the most fun anyway...

New Pastel Painting of the Dimick Lighthouse in Port Townsend, Washington

I just finished this painting of the Dimick Lighthouse in Port Townsend, Washington.  I had started it a couple of months ago, and then I got a very exciting commission to paint a book cover for the New York Times bestselling author JoAnn Ross!  I just finished that painting, which I will post at a later time, and so I came back to this one to finish it up.

Beach Huts in Wales, Colored Pencil on board, 5x7

My husband and I came across these beach huts while on vacation on the Llyn Peninsula of Northern Wales.  Although the town where we were staying was very busy, the beach was almost empty even though it was July.  I loved this part of Wales and hope to go back someday!
Currently on auction at Daily Paint Works - you can bid here.
